Abstract

The fusion of radio, internet and mobile technologies is changing the nature of information, how it is sourced, compiled and produced, who produces it and for whom. In addition, entirely new forms of distribution are emerging, bridging radio with portable media devices and the internet with wireless broadcasting. It is also seeing the emergence of new applications as artists and independent media practitioners fuse conventional broadcasting technologies with Global Positioning Satellites, aggregated content feeds, open source software development and networked production environments. "The Fusion Paper" provides a historical context for information technology convergence, describes the efforts of media makers in the Asia region, discusses the opportunities for broadcasters and points to the necessity for a clear understanding of the role of policy in sustaining these largely grassroots efforts.
