Sampling Legitimised in France
French DJs are amongst the first sample artists, people who create new
sound works by re-sampling the works of others, to have their music
recognised as legitimate creations.
Under a new ruling by SACEM, a powerful music industry association, DJs
who "modify and put together other people's records will henceforth receive
1/12th of the rights for the resulting creation."
DJs are often seen as people who simply play other people's music, fading
songs in and out across dance beats at raves, parties and clubs. In the past
decade, DJs have become music makers in their own right. In France they will
now be considered as artists in their own right and paid accordingly. |
