APC Programs
By Edie Farwell
Since the announcement of its new programme portfolio in March, APC has
been busy with final planning and launching of these programmes.
Appreciation is given to the Ford Foundation for funding of this launch.
The Supporting Electronic Networks programme of APC is underway, with
Amalia Souza as its Programme Coordinator. Amalia is based in Brazil and
since 1994 has served as APC's adjunct coordinator and member and partner
relations coordinator. This programme's objective is to strengthen the
capacities of existing and emerging electronic networks to build strategic
communities - work which Amalia has already been doing but now is more
formalized in the programme structure.
The Promoting Strategic Uses programme of APC is also underway, with Karin
Delgadillo Poepsel as the Programme Coordinator. Karin is based in Ecuador,
has been working with the APC Secretariat since 1996, and previously was the
Ecuanex APC Council representative. This programme's objective is to empower
citizen activists and social change organizations to take full advantage of
information and communication technology (ICT's) with the aim of assisting
them to accomplish their collective objectives.
The Developing Information and Communications Content and Tools programme
has as an objective to develop new products, information resources and
applications to support the development of strategic communities. Mark
Surman from Web Networks, Canada, is leading APC in developing this
programme further before we hire a programme coordinator.
The Lobbying and Advocacy programme was created to guarantee open and
equitable ICT and information access for civil society, and in particular,
for strategic communities closely associated with social change objectives.
Txema Laullon from IPANEX, the Spanish State, is overseeing this programme -
the final of the four core programmes APC will launch.
The Womens Programme, which was founded in 1993, is having a planning
meeting in Ecuador, hosted by Ecuanex, October 17-21. This meeting will
plan strategy and direction for the next phase of the Women's Programme. For
further information on this programme, email <apcwomen-info@igc.apc.org>.
A Latin American regional womens programme meeting will be held the week
before the global meeting. Karen Banks from GreenNet, United Kingdom, is
coordinating the Womens Programme.
The Africa Programme has pulled together APC member and partner networks,
individual activist networkers and collaborative people and organizations
throughout Africa to respond to the ICT needs and issues in the African
continent. Anriette Esterhuysen from SANGONeT, South Africa is coordinating
the Africa programme.
