Internet in Cambodia
By Paul Wilson
The race to bring the Internet to Cambodia has apparently ended, with the development-oriented CamNet beating Telstra's contender in establishing the first trans-pacific link. The article which follows is reprinted from the Cambodia Daily.
The IDRC's networking activities in Cambodia started in 1996, with consultancy advice provided by Pegasus Networks. However, prior to this, low-cost dialup network services had been operating in the country for some time, both through the Pegasus-linked Pactok member, CCCNet (run by the Cambodian Cooperation Committee); and the Open Forum network, which is itself a partner of the APC, through its connections to the Institute for Global Communications in the USA.
In the tiny Cambodian Internet market, there will be very little room for competing service providers, whether commercial or non-commercial. While the NGO-oriented non-commercial providers are naturally inclined to cooperate to provide better services, it now seems that Telstra, though normally fiercely competitive, is having to rethink its strategy. |
