Date: Wed, April 29 1998 Hello again. This time I'm sitting in the library in Gladtone, so I'm once again making use of my Hotmail account (address <hotpedals@hotmail.com>) -- turning out to be very handy. Once again it's totally free (only charge 20 cents per page to print) and it's a much better setup than in Bundaberg because it doesn't seem to be so heavily booked so I'll be able to use it again during my stay (I've paid for a week at the caravan park). The limit is one hour at a time, that's the catch, and somehow I've manage to use up most of my hour already, just fiddling around, creating folders, reading my incoming mail & printing it etc. etc. (Many thanks to Annie, Skat Cat, Marjorie and Anthea -- good to hear from you). So far I haven't found an Internet shop, so I haven't been able to check my normal Pegasus mail yet. Will do as soon as I can. [NOTE TO GEORGE (my dentist) The ride from Bundaberg was a HARD RIDE by and large, but satisfying. Already forgotten how many days it took me, four I think, will tell you all that stuff next time. But every day, I was REALLY glad to arrive at my accommodation (then of course, tired or not, had to set about putting up my tent, cook dinner and all that stuff) usually in a rush because it was getting dark by then. And by the way, I've made the discovery that I have become addicted to the exertion, or I think I am. Like marathon runners. Must have a masochistic streak I didn't know about. Whenever I stay anywhere for a while (like those two weeks in Bundaberg) I start feeling off colour and listless. Then, once the exertion of riding plus the rigours of camping starts up again, I feel great, even when in the last stages of exhaustion and am suffering from a very sore bum. Crazy. There must be a bit of a puritan in me somewhere, though I never would have believed so (I've always opted for the soft life, hedonism & self indulgence!) Hey, I've gone 10 minutes over time and noone has come near me yet. Obviously they don't have a booking for the next hour. Still, I'd better finish up, just in case. But I will definitely make another booking, and next time I will spend the WHOLE HOUR on a Newsletter so I can elaborate much more on my amazing adventures. Among other things, I met a very nice cyclist from Germany (an architect from East Berlin) in Gin Gin. He was cycling from Sydney to Cairns, allowing 8 weeks. Very ambitious! But he was travelling much lighter and doing 100 to 150km per day. We camped together that night at a Rest Area (very good!) at Granite
Creek, 64 km from Gin Gin, on the way to Miriam Vale. That 64 km was one
of the HARD DAYS!! I left Gin Gin at 1 PM (about par for the course for
me) and just got there by nightfall. More soon. |
