While They're Not Watching
The software development company, On Technology launched a marketing campaign this week with the results of a study they conducted. It revealed that seventy-two of the one hundred companies they surveyed indicated that staff had been using the Internet to access pornographic, sports and other non-work related sites.
Their campaign promoted their Internet monitoring software, a tool that can be tailored to observe employee Internet usage. ON Guard is designed for managers concerned that staff may be using their free Internet access and work hours to browse non-work related Web, FTP, Telnet and Gopher sites. A searchable database will give the network manager a comprehensive rundown of how the organisation's network connections are being used. ON Guard's database can provide such detailed information as search words which may be entered into Internet search engines and what websites were accessed from them. The software can also be used to block access to sites deemed inappropriate.
The implications ON Guard has on 'trust' and privacy factors in any work environment appears to be have been thought through by the software developers. They provide recommendations for the development of an acceptable Internet use policy that any organisation can tailor to their needs.
