Join the Consortium for Social Justice and Human Rights
Source: The People's Decade of Human Rights Education
Forty-eight years after the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was proclaimed, and two years into the UN Decade for Human Rights Education, 1995-2004, many of the world's people remain unaware of both the Declaration and the UN Decade.
Many non-governmental and community groups engaged in struggles for economic and social justice are not familiar with the powerful content of the Declaration and its relevance to their daily lives, or the Platform of Action for the UN Decade. Indeed many communities in struggle have not defined their efforts within a human rights perspective. That's why the 50th Anniversary of humanity's most critical and empowering document should not pass in silence.
There is no better way to celebrate this anniversary than to launch a major campaign for human rights education with, for, and by the communities who stand to gain most from the Declaration's proclamations.
We invite all social justice and human rights groups around the world to join the Consortium to:
CATALYZE COMMUNITIES OF LEARNING, REFLECTING AND ACTING AND TO CLAIM HUMAN RIGHTS AS THE RIGHT TO BE HUMAN.
How you can participate in the Campaign
As a hub for networking and materials dissemination, the Secretariat will be available to groups working with the following concerns: women, children, refugees, migrant workers, disarmament/demilitarization, health, housing, human settlement, food, development, labor, differently abled, education, environment, indigenous peoples, minorities, peace, racism, religion, discrimination, the aged, and sexual orientation, to name a few.
The Consortium appeals to grassroots and community organizations and the NGOs working with them on these and other social justice issues to join together in build National Action Committees to design and carry out a Plan of Action that engages all sectors of their society in human rights learning toward and beyond the 50th Anniversary. It is proposed that the committees will include:
- Educators, social and economic justice activists, and community leaders of varied constituencies;
- Human rights experts, lawyers to hold authorities accountable for human rights obligations; and
- Media to provide greater access to information and learning for the general public.
We are eager to learn from you about your plans, ideas, and your suggestions for establishing viable grassroots education and cultural activities, using the 50th anniversary as an empowering strategy for the community.
Please contact us and add your group's name to the Campaign.
