Month of Gender and World Bank Issues
During May, the Internet was employed for two significant campaigns calling on the World Bank to examine its programs and operations in view of Bank gender policy.
The Association for Women in Development (AWID) circulated a sign-on letter for presentation to World Bank president, James Wolfensohn, on May 16. It was planned to coincide with the launch of the report, "Gender Equity and the World Bank Group: A Post-Beijing Assessment", by Women's Eyes on the World Bank. The report noted that "admirable commitment from the top" had yet to translate into positive action in World Bank programs and operations.
The second initiative coincided with International Day of Action for Women's Health, 28 May. The Women's Global Network for Reproductive Rights (WGNRR) circulated information to women's organisations worldwide, detailing a fax protest to the Bank regarding the negative effects of structural adjustment programs on women's health and access to health services. Those affected adversely by Bank programs were encouraged to cite local experiences in their faxes.
